When someone searches for a plumber, a dentist or a marketing agency near them, Google usually shows a map with three businesses at the top. Those listings, often called the Map Pack, get a large share of the calls and visits that come from local search. The good news is that earning a spot is mostly about doing a handful of basics well and keeping them up to date.
Use this checklist as a starting point for your own business.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the most important local listing you have. If you have not claimed it, do that first, then fill in every section that applies to you.
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add secondary categories only where they truly apply.
- Add your hours, phone number, website and service area.
- List your services with short, clear descriptions.
- Upload real photos of your team, your work and your location.
- Update holiday hours before the holidays, not after.
2. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent
Google compares the details it finds about your business across the web. If one directory lists an old phone number and another uses a different version of your business name, it creates doubt. Pick one exact version of your name, address and phone number and use it everywhere, including your website, social profiles and local directories. Fix or remove old listings that show outdated information.
3. Build pages for your services and locations
Your website should tell Google and customers what you do and where you do it. A single page that tries to cover everything rarely ranks well.
- Create one page for each core service.
- If you serve several towns, add helpful pages for the ones that matter most, with real details rather than copied text.
- Put your business name, address and phone number on every page, ideally in the footer.
- Embed a map and add clear calls to action on your contact page.
4. Earn reviews and reply to them
Reviews influence both rankings and whether a customer picks you. Make it easy to leave one by sending a direct review link right after a job or visit, when the experience is fresh. Reply to every review in a professional way, including the critical ones, since future customers read how you respond.
Follow Google review policies. Do not pay for reviews and do not post fake ones, because that can get your profile penalized.
5. Make your website fast and mobile friendly
Most local searches happen on phones. If your site is slow, hard to read or hides your phone number, visitors leave and Google notices. Test your pages on a phone, compress large images and put a tap-to-call button where people can see it without scrolling.
6. Add local content and local links
Links from other local websites show Google that your business is part of the community. Look for natural opportunities:
- Local chambers of commerce and business associations.
- Sponsorships of youth teams, events or charities.
- Partner businesses that can link to you and that you can link back to.
- Local news or community blogs when you have something worth sharing.
On your own site, write about local topics your customers care about, such as seasonal tips or answers to common questions in your area.
7. Post updates on your profile
Adding posts, offers and new photos to your Google Business Profile shows that the business is active. It also gives people more reasons to choose you when they see your listing next to the competition.
8. Track calls, direction requests and visits
Rankings are useful, but they are not the goal. The goal is more customers. Your Google Business Profile shows calls, direction requests and website clicks, and your website analytics show which pages bring people in. Check these numbers monthly and note what changes after you make an update.
How long does local SEO take?
Some fixes, like correcting a phone number or completing your profile, can help within weeks. Competitive searches can take several months of steady work, and nobody can promise a specific position because Google decides the rankings. What you can control is the quality and consistency of your effort.
